Staying Cool This Summer

The 2018 summer has already seen some record-breaking heat. Some areas in the U.S. have hit all-time high temperatures. Unfortunately, sometimes air conditioning stopped working. That’s typically when appreciation for modern luxury kicks in. Believe it or not, before the advent of air conditioning humans found ways to survive unpleasantly high temperatures. Here’s a list of ways to beat the heat without losing your cool.

  1. Cross-Breeze: This classic trick is dependent on your floorplan. Open windows on opposite sides of the house. Under the right circumstances, air pressure will cause a concentrated breeze to flow through the house.
  2. Cotton is Cool: Use cotton wherever possible, especially for your bedsheets. Wear loose-fitting clothes instead of form-fitting. You can even put bedsheets into the freezer for an hour before going to bed. Silk and synthetic fabrics retain heat.
  3. Utilize Anatomy: Occasionally, run your wrists under cold water from the sink. Your wrists contain veins that are close to the surface. Perfect for cooling your blood as it passes by. Other areas that are not so easy to rinse off are your neck, inner elbows, and inner knees.
  4. First Floor: Stay on the ground level of your home as much as possible. This may mean bringing your ing arrangements downstairs.
  5. Cool One Room: If you’re using an old swamp cooler, place it in the room you spend the most time in during the day. Setup the cooling in the window and close all of the doors to the room. Your swamp cooler may not be able to chill the whole house, but it will keep one room quite chilled.
  6. Eat Salad: Or, eat anything that does not require any cooking. There’s only a slight distinction between a stove and a furnace. Even the stove top generates a lot of heat that will increase the temperature in the house.
